Flavio Rogerio Hickel Jr., Ph.D.

Associate Professor of Political Science, Washington College

Flavio Rogerio Hickel Jr is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Washington College (Chestertown, MD) where he teaches courses on Race/Ethnic Politics, Public Opinion, and American Political Institutions. 

His research explores the impact of marginalized identities on political attitudes with an emphasis on Latino communities in the United States.  He is particularly interested in the different ways in which individuals define Latino identity and the political implications of those understandings.  

His scholarship has been published in various peer-reviewed journals including Public Opinion QuarterlySocial Science Quarterly, and Politics & Religion. His public scholarship has also been featured in outlets such as The Washington Post, Religion News Services, and through PRRI Spotlight analyses.  He is also a frequent commentator for the Baltimore Sun, Latin Times, Yahoo News, Axios, Newsweek, and other periodicals.

He holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University and was a Public Fellow at the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) from 2022-2024 where he explored how different religious beliefs/practices (or lack thereof) can impact Latino identity and political attitudes. He has over a decade of experience fielding high quality public opinion surveys. He is the founding director for the Washington College Eastern Shore Opinion Poll and previously worked with the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Research. He also served as the Policy Director for the 2016 and 2018 Campaign to Elect Peter Jacob to NJ 7th Congressional District.
